What women in history inspire you? A poll was conducted in Frederick Douglass this week to see what women people look up to.
The questions in the polls were:
- What women in history inspire you?
- Why does this woman inspire you?
- What questions would you ask this woman if you had the chance?
The results were mostly women who changed the culture of today. For example, responses were Rosa Parks, Ruth Bade Ginsburg, Ruby Bridges, and Susan B Anthony just to name a few. Without these women our world would be completely different. Rosa Parks had the courage to “stand up for what was right”, wrote the anonymous responder, “defying everyone around her.” All of these women are incredibly inspirational and have made huge accomplishments.
Another result that came from the polls were sports inspirations such as, Masai Russell. Sports was such a boundary for women for so long that it is important to shed the light on people in the sports industry as well. Having inspiration for something that is so challenging, both physically and mentally, can allow the athlete to look to the future and realize why they are doing all of this.
The questions that many responders had for these women were thoughtful and were consistently about how these women persevered. For example a response was, “Were you ever scared? How did you push through that fear?” The overwhelming agreement that the majority of responders wanted to know how to get past hurt and fears speaks volumes. It shows how courageous these women are, but also how many of us aim to have that courage and want to know how to.
March is the month that is dedicated to Women’s History. Women have been so influential to our history that they deserve to be shown respect and admiration. Women’s History Month was originally just a day, so it is so incredible that it has grown this much. Now we are able to look at all of the accomplishments women have done, and how much more we are capable of doing.
