Students of Fredrick Douglas have recently participated in KUNA, the Kentucky United Nations Assembly 2025.
KUNA is a program through the YMCA in which a student represents a country of their choice and then creates a proposed bill or law under the United nation, which is referred to as a resolution.
Addison Myers, Colin Cook, and Izzy Wallace are all students who have participated in KUNA for several years, and have represented Finland with “An Act calling upon the UN to create guidance on Physician-assisted suicide.” To which their bill was passed through an extensive debate.
Kamryn Austin-Edge, Niyah Holt, Elizabeth Otto, and Kendal Stoneburner had their very first bill passed, representing Iceland with “A Resolution to Establish Global Recycling Standards Based on the Icelandic Model¨.
KUNA allows students to get out of their comfort zones, learn about other countries, as well as propose new resolutions or debate on other existing ones.
¨Students are also able to become presiding officers and be in charge of the conferences or even do things like media core, where you can take pictures and journalism¨ says Ms. Jaworski, a supervisor for KUNA.
Ms. Jaworski’s favorite aspect of KUNA is seeing student progress and feel comfortable in front of large crowds of people.
¨I love seeing students just rocking what they know and putting themselves out there¨ she says.
