The Recycling Club is closing after a successful 6 years due to funding and attendance problems from its members that have caused John Hooker, the sponsor, to step down.
Many people were involved in this club throughout the 6 years it ran and it is extremely depressing to be faced with the reality that it will no longer exist. John Hooker, the prior sponsor, has been open about the club starting up again if another sponsor comes with more involved students.
This club was a commitment many students made, however not all of them could continue to show up and participate. “I have chosen to step down as the unpaid sponsor of this club for a few reasons, but the main reason boils down to a lack of availability from my members,” explained John Hooker, “Each year, we start the club strong with a dozen+ members interested in the conservation of Earth’s valuable resources. Over the course of each school year, however, other clubs with more strict attendance requirements tend to deplete my team of volunteers from that dozen+ number down to just 4 or 5 reliable members. Sadly, this is not enough volunteers to meet the collection demand that we commit to in the Fall.”
We were incredibly lucky to have had this club provide recycling bins to all of our classrooms for the past 6 years and for all those who participated in the works of the movement. If only it was enough to keep the club going.
This has created a good amount of positive change to FDHS. “Over the last 6 years,” told Hooker,“ we have collectively prevented thousands of pounds of would-be trash from being sent to the landfill.” While a lot of recycling gets ignored in the world, this recycling club has made an impact just in a school.
Teachers, staff, and students are disappointed about the termination of the recycling club and hope that the district will fill the need by providing recycling as an additional part of our custodial staff’s job.
