FDHS students and teachers are extremely angered by the nearby traffic issues during both the morning and afternoon as they struggle to arrive at school and work on time.
Each morning, the car line spills out onto Meeting Street as students, teachers, and parents try earnestly to get into the parking lot. On some days, it can cause major backups and long delays.
“I’ve honestly seen a lot of issues,” said Mrs. Vincent, English teacher, “especially right around the school gets very crowded, and I’ve noticed a couple of other fellow teachers become frustrated as well.”
Vincent also states how it would be more convenient if the police officers “pull[ed] traffic up and push[ed] it along,” as Douglass currently has no supervision along the roads.
However, the FDHS police officers argue that Douglass hasn’t had many issues involving traffic so far in the school year. “I think the arrival and dismissal are pretty smooth,” Officer Gary Gruman states, “I don’t know how much more we could do to improve it.”
Although Gruman states the irrelevance of traffic by the school, many students have recently been marked as tardy due to accidents caused by this traffic.
Front office attendance clerk, Claira Reynolds, speaks up about how this matter impacts students. “There have been a couple of days where an accident, either on 75 or at the end of Winchester Road, has affected attendance anywhere from 5, 15, to even 20 minutes.”
However, Reynolds has also suggested that this traffic has been an ongoing issue that stays consistent throughout the year. “It’s just part of the job,” she explains, “We just kind of go with what the administration wants to do and how we can handle it.”
Whether or not the administration at Douglass agrees, many teachers and students still find this issue very real and are still searching for a solution to address this aggravating situation.
