On April 14th, 2025, HOSA went on a field trip to Justin’s Place in Wilmore, Ky. The place is ran by a registered nurse and the goal in visiting was to show the students a different kind of career opportunity in healthcare. They focus on using assisted services for children between the ages of 3-12. This is for children who have a disability or sensory disorder.
Ms.Holman, one of the HOSA directors, stated “based on the feedback from students, they enjoyed the field trip” Students were shown the different activities they use for children. She said “For example some children who come to the farm are unable to walk therefore they have the opportunity to ride a horse and get a glimpse into what it’s like to be able to ambulate.”
“The farm has numerous barns which house a variety of animals used as part of the treatment plan for the students including goats, donkeys, pigs, and mini horses. Students were able to pet the animals and feed the goats. They have bunny and chicken houses as well and of course what is a farm with a cat and a dog (Dalmatian). They do offer vaulting lessons for the children and have barrels students were able to climb on and practice a variety of vaulting moves. The farm had a nice play area for the kids to use for sensory disorders and as a relaxation area if they are becoming overwhelmed.” Said by lovely Ms.Holman.
Workers and Volunteers spoke with the students about the kinds of children they work with and what conditions some children were in. They modify equipment for certain barriers presented by different children’s conditions, which increases empathy and broadens their perspectives.
It was informed that many students were interested in volunteering at the farm later in the future, and that many students enjoyed the trip and felt that it was relaxing and great for their own mental health as well.
