Douglass students are writing care cards for many children in hospitals.
Two times a month, students meet during Advisory on ‘Club Days’ to decorate cards to spread cheer around the hospital. Students are provided paper and markers then given time to decorate. Students are also awarded volunteer hours which is helpful when applying for scholarships and college applications.
The idea was inspired by Ellie Majors, a junior, who once was hospitalized at the age of ten. When she was sick the cards brought her such joy during a time of darkness. Now, she wants to share that feeling of being loved and supported by others to show that they aren’t alone and they can fight through it.
“When I was sick, the cards really carried me through,” says Ellie.
“After hearing her story, I knew I wanted to join,” says Armoni Johnson, sophomore. “I wanted to be a part of such a positive group. I also want the sick children to feel like they are not alone and cared for.”
