The new Teaching and Learning Magnet Program provides students with a unique opportunity to start exploring education careers early while earning college credit and gaining hands-on experience throughout high school.
“Only out of district students that are upcoming freshmen are eligible to apply. But in district students will be able to be a part of the pathway in their sophomore year of high school” Ms.Isaacs stated.
Beginning in 2026, incoming out of district freshmen will be able to be put in an educational pathway to get an early start on learning and exploring education careers. The pathway includes field trips to colleges, universities, middle and elementary schools to get hands-on experience with education without being in a classroom all the time.
Students wishing to enter the program as freshmen must meet certain requirements such as a 2.5 or higher gpa and scoring in 60th percentile or higher in reading.
Districted Douglass students will still be able to enter the pathway but only as sophomores.
Ms.Isaacs, the head of teaching and learning says,”I am excited for more students to come and want to learn about education here, at Frederick Douglass.”
Although they are trying to make this program bigger, only 25 out of district students are accepted. Applications are going to be posted before the end of the year so it can be reviewed in January, in time to make decisions for the upcoming school year.
By entering this program students can earn up to 15 dual credit hours by the time they graduate high school. Dual credit hours will be through Western Kentucky University. This will not be a core class for students, it will take place of one of their electives.
By their senior year students will be able to participate in internships and co-op.
