Here at Frederick Douglass High School, a new club is up and running for the 2026-2027 school year. The Spectrum of Light Club is new to Douglass and has big plans for the upcoming year. The club aims to make a positive impact on the school while also raising awareness for autism and other disabilities. The club hopes to give opportunities to students to learn and connect with one another.
The club’s president, Harper Euga, explained the purpose of the organization.
“The Spectrum of Light Club is an organization that supports autism and disability awareness, and so we do a lot of fundraisers and lots of events.” Euga said.
As a brand new organization, one of its main goals is to increase awareness and encourage student involvement.
“My goal currently is to just raise awareness and get more students involved, since this is our first year at Douglass.” Egua says.
The sponsor of the club, Bryony Rowe, also shared about why she feels this club is important to the Douglass community.
“I believe the Spectrum of Light is important because all students deserve to be authentically connected to their school community and have the opportunity to make like-minded friends.” Rowe says. “Students should join Spectrum of Light because it’s a great way to meet new people, participate in fun activities, and advocate for disability awareness.”
In addition to raising awareness, club leaders hope Spectrum of Light will help create a more inclusive environment throughout the school.
“I hope that it causes douglass students to be more inclusive and just brings us all together in a way that other clubs can’t.” Euga said.
As Spectrum of Light begins its first year at Frederick Douglass, club members hope to build a welcoming community while educating students, promoting inclusion for everyone, and creating lasting connections between students throughout the school.
