When I first heard about Senior Signing Day, I didn’t think it was a big deal. I mean, I’m just a freshman, I’m still settling in. College feels forever away, and I’m still figuring out where to go for future classes.
But after seeing this year’s signing day, I realized it’s actually one of the most important moments in high school, especially for our seniors at Douglass.
Senior Signing Day is when seniors officially commit to the colleges they’ll be attending, whether it’s for sports, academics, or other opportunities. Watching them sit at those tables, waiting to get called up, wearing their future school’s colors, surrounded by their families, teammates, and friends, it’s kind of inspiring, even if you don’t know them personally.
What stood out to me the most was how much work it must have taken to get there.
They spent years practicing, studying, balancing school and activities, and pushing through stress and setbacks. Signing Day isn’t just about the moment, it’s about everything that led up to it.
It also made me think about the future in a different way. As a freshman, high school feels like something you just have to get through. But seeing seniors reach that milestone made me realize that these four years actually go by very quick, and I need to make the most of my high school time. It made me start to wonder what I want my own Signing Day to look like someday and where I would end up going.
Another thing that makes Signing Day important is how it brings the school together. People cheer, take pictures, and celebrate each other’s success. It’s not just about individual achievements, but about all the achievements our students at Douglass have accomplished.
It’s also important because it reminds us as a school that success looks different for everyone. Not every senior signs with a big sports program or a famous college, but every path matters.
Whether someone is going to a local school, a trade program, or pursuing something completely different, Signing Day still represents growth and moving forward.
As a freshman, I didn’t expect to care about something like this. But now I see it as a preview of what hard work and dedication can lead to. It’s not just a ceremony, it’s a symbol of everything high school can help you become.
And even though my Signing Day is still years away, I’ll definitely be making the most of my time here at Douglass, and I hope you do the same.
