This past weekend, The FBLA club at Frederick Douglass High School competed in their state convention, with over 20 people placing.
The sponsor of the FBLA club, Scroggins, was able to elaborate on how he prepared his students for success when competing in a challenging setting.
“We gave them a lot of quizlets and practice tests,” Scroggins explains. “In addition to that, we gave everybody index cards and asked them to make a minimum of 100 definitions, because the pure act of writing the definition is a great learning process, and that was a big success this year.”
With so much preparation, the FBLA team did very well and Scroggins continues to share how he felt when receiving so many awards from his students.
“I was just so excited when I saw so many people. We have 24 top 5 places, including nine state champions.” He explains. “So I was just overjoyed and excited to see the hard work of the students pay off.”
Not only did the students succeed in the competition, but many enjoyed the social part of the convention and getting to know new people as well.
“My favorite part of the conventions was meeting new people and learning about their events or what they were doing to increase my network of people in the business world.” Gavin Lawless, a 2nd place Securities and Industries winner stated.
The team is extremely excited about going to nationals, although some are a little nervous about the competition.
“There’s gonna be a bunch of very hardworking and professionally tutored people,” Lawless continues, “so that is going to be a daunting task.”
However, the FBLA team is continuing to work hard to succeed in nationals, so make sure to wish them all good luck!
“I can’t wait,” Scroggins says, “Nationals is a brand new level, so you’re going against the best of the best. So as good as we did at state, we do not want to take it for granted.”
