As the school year comes to an end, the National Honor Society is finding ways to thank teachers for their hard work and dedication. One of the biggest projects this spring is the Teacher Appreciation Gift Bag activity, where students make gift bags and handwritten cards for teachers at school.
The project allows students to give back to the teachers who help them every day. Students can earn academic service hours by creating appreciation cards and gift bags filled with chocolate, pens, gift cards, coffee cups. The goal is to make teachers feel recognized for the time and effort they put into helping students while they earn community service hours each activity is up to 2 hours of academic service.1 hour for every $5 spent and 30 minutes per card.
NHS member Kennedy Buchanan said the activity is important because teachers often do more than students realize.
“Teachers help us every day, and they deserve to feel appreciated,” Kennedy said.
“Even something small like a gift bag or a card can make them feel good.” She chose to make a gift bag to Mr. Cope, who is a math teacher at the school. She said she wanted to thank him for always helping students.
Teacher appreciation projects like this one also help the connection between students and teachers. Most of the time focusing on grades and assignments, students have the chance to give back to and support the people and staff that help them throughout the year.
The NHS guidelines encouraged students to make the cards creative and personal rather than rushed or simple. Organizers said the activity was designed not only to support teachers but also to teach students the value of gratitude and service.
As Teacher Appreciation Week comes to an end, members of NHS want their efforts to remind teachers that their work matters. Giving back to the teachers is a way to show respect and appreciation for the impact teachers have on students every day.
