Earth Day is a very important day of the year to recognize what we need to do to protect the earth. Simple things like recycling and using reusable products do a lot for the preservation of our planet.
Decades before the first Earth Day Americans consumed a lot of leaded gas from automobiles. Air pollution was very common and widely accepted throughout the country as it was a sign of prosperity. People were clueless about the effects of pollution and the bad impact on human health and the planet. Senator Gaylord Nelson was concerned about the effects so he started a teach-in on college campuses. April 22 was chosen because it was between spring break and final exams so the most students would participate. This is now Earth Day as we recognize it today.
As stated before a senator from Wisconsin named Gaylord Nelson was concerned about the environment and its deterioration. He was called into action about this after he witnessed the Santa Barbara oil spill. Nelson needed a way to get his message across and decided to project the message with anti-war sentiments that college students at the time were protesting for. His idea was successful and many colleges across the country started protesting the lax laws on protecting the environment.
To celebrate Earth day and all throughout the year you can make sure to recycle plastic and try to use ethically made products. If these options aren’t available to you you can try taking shorter showers and turning off the tap while brushing your teeth. Try to thrift clothes and especially jeans since they use 1,800 gallons of water to produce just one pair. Doing these things will help the environment in small parts and if many people do it then a real difference will be made.
Earth day is a day to celebrate all the resources that the Earth provides and to keep it this way the human race needs to preserve and do their best to keep the precious resources that the earth has because there is only one Earth and we won’t get another one if we destroy this one.
