The National Honor Society has something for everyone! Whether that be peer tutoring, a good look on your resume, and/or a graduation cord!
The National Honor Society (NHS) is a club, organized by Sarah Maines, for students who strive to reach higher and beyond, and are rewarded by getting an invitation to be in this society. Only the best students from grades 10-12 who have the best grades and have a 3.5 GPA or higher get invited to be part of this service organization.
NHS is meant to be a reward for outstanding students, so they have an opportunity to have a lovely resume builder and to be able to contribute back into the community by helping with service opportunities. “ It’s a service organization. It’s a national honor society. So it basically rewards kids who are good kids with a pretty stole, and it looks nice, but also we do great things for the community,” says Sarah Maines.
NHS is open to anyone and everyone can get invited, as long as they have a 3.5 GPA or higher! The only people who aren’t and can’t be invited are freshmen. But, they can always try sophomore year!
Maines later said, “ …I get a list of all the students in the school who have a 3.5 [GPA] or above. I send them an invitation. [But they] still have to apply, and they have to get three letters of recommendation. If you’re a good person and you have good grades [then you’ll get into NHS.]
They also offer tutoring, and members of society help others with homework, understanding things happening in class, etc. The Learner’s Equal Advancement Program enables this to take place.
“ The main thing we do with the NHS is called LEAP, where people who already have good grades serve as mentors to people who need help or even sophomores who are in AP classes who are like, wait, what do I do?… Upperclassmen help them and anyone else who really wants a mentor succeed and do well in school,” said Mrs. Maines.
There are always meetings available on Wednesdays and Thursdays after school until 4:30! If you have any questions about tutoring, you can always ask Mrs. Maines in 210!
