In an impressive display of civic engagement, leadership, and advocacy, a group of dedicated FDHS students- Gracie Ogunbayo, Niyah Holt, Elizabeth Otto, and Kendal Stoneburner- successfully guided their student-crafted legislation through both chambers of the Kentucky General Assembly.
“It’s a great advancement because we have never had our own space this good and this can add good ideas and better placement. I love that this is our own thing that we started, “ stated Mr. Ferrington
Their bill, which focused on addressing homelessness and improving housing affordability across the state, resonated strongly with legislators and sparked meaningful debate.
The bill’s journey was remarkable. Passing both the Kentucky House and Senate is an exceptional achievement for any student delegation, reflecting the depth of research, preparation, and passion these students brought to the table.
“I wish we spent more time debating our bill and tried to get more information from the Governor”, continued Mr. Ferrington
Although the legislation was ultimately vetoed by the Governor, the impact of their work reached far beyond the final vote. Their proposal prompted vigorous, high-level discussions and demonstrated the power of student voices in shaping conversations around critical social issues.
Their leadership played a significant role in FDHS earning Premier Delegation status, a distinction that recognizes excellence in participation, professionalism, and performances at the event. The accomplishment underscores not only their commitment but also the strength of the entire FDHS KYA group.
Their mentorship helped empower young leaders to engage thoughtfully with real-world policy issues and advocate for meaningful change
The experience serves as a powerful reminder of what young people can accomplish when given the opportunity to lead, collaborate, and think critically about the world around them
