Kavery Myrick is a Varsity Softball player at Frederick Douglass Highschool.
Sports injuries can be physically and emotionally draining.
It is hard to stay positive when you are in the midst of recovering from an injury.
Athletes tend to spend a large percent of their time playing their sport. When
injuries occur it can cause some confusion because they aren’t used to being isolated
from their teammates.
We asked Kavery to tell us one thing the time away from the field has taught her
about who she is. “It taught me who I am outside of my sport. Softball is my life and
my injury helped me find who I am as a person, not just an athlete.”
During the recovery process it is important to have support. Injuries can be
isolating, but it is important to stay connected with your loved ones.
“The people who have helped me keep my spirits up are my dad who motivates me
and my best friend Charlie because she is always here hanging out with me and she
stays by my side” Kavery says.

The healing process takes time and some find it hard to adjust to the daily changes
that come with an injury. Taking it day by day and celebrating the small wins can help
you stay positive and continue a good recovery.
“A small win I’ve had during my recovery was 2 weeks in. I hit 95 degrees when I
was only supposed to be able to bend my knee to 90 degrees so I was just really proud
that I could exceed my goal.”
We asked Kavery what she is going to enjoy most when she gets back out there and
she said, “I am gonna enjoy being around my teammates and just doing what I love.
I’m gonna be so happy because softball is my life.”
For Kavery, tearing her ACL was just another game she is determined to win. We
know when she returns back to the field she will be stronger than ever.
